Homeowner confidence shows biggest leap in 7 years
The House Price Sentiment Index, compiled with information from surveys conducted by researchers at IHS Markit, shows that homeowners across the UK perceived the value of their property to have increased between August and September 2016.
Any reading over 50 on the index demonstrates confidence that house prices are on the rise. September’s results came in at 56.9 - a rise of 5.5 over August's figure - resulting in the largest month-on-month increase for seven years. The most substantial price growth was perceived by households in London, followed by those in the South East and East of England.
According to Tim Moore, senior economist at IHS Markit: “Recent survey data indicates that Brexit uncertainty has temporarily dented but not derailed housing market confidence.” He observes that “September data highlights a sustained recovery in house price sentiment from the three-and-a-half year low seen just after the EU referendum. In each of the past two months, UK households’ views have become more upbeat in terms of both current property values and expected prices for the year ahead.”
