Experience the capital’s changing skyline:1666-2016
1616 view of London's skyline engraved by 17th century draughtsman Claes Jansz Visscher
“In a city moving so fast, it pays to look back.” That’s the rationale behind the Guildhall Art Gallery’s exhibition “Visscher Redrawn: 1616-2016”, which ran until 20th November 2016. Claes Jansz Visscher was a skilled draughtsman who lived and worked in London in the early part of the 17th century. Thanks to his iconic engraving “View of London”, we have a visual record of the capital as it was, before the Great Fire of 1666.
2016 view of London's skyline created by artist Robin Reynolds
The engraving was published in 1616 – the year of Shakespeare’s death – and 400 years on, in 2016 artist Robin Reynolds created a huge panorama to equal the work of Visscher, showing London’s skyline as it is today.
The two artworks which were displayed side-by-side at the Guildhall Art Gallery in an exhibition mounted to commemorate both the 400th anniversary of Shakespeare’s death and the 350th anniversary of the Great Fire of London drew huge crowds of locals and tourists.
