Spotlight on Canada Water
A Peregrine falcon gliding above the new build homes in the docklands is a common sight
Where else in London can you see a Great Crested Grebe swooping to catch a crayfish? Or watch a peregrine falcon fly overhead as you dine alfresco?
Elegant skyscrapers in Canada Water with stunning apartments for sale
Canada Water’s sleek high-rise buildings create a striking contrast with the area’s docks and waterways – there’s even a freshwater lake where wildlife flourishes. Here you’ll find everything you need to live, work and play: great shopping, a cinema, peaceful places to walk and run together with a range of eateries to suit all tastes. Fitness fanatics can get up to speed at the newly built Southwark Athletics Centre while art lovers will enjoy the SE16 Community Arts Festival, which last year staged over 30 events in 17 different venues over one weekend.
Stunning waterfront properties in Canada Water with views of Canary Wharf
Watching the army of workers stream out of Canada Water’s offices at 5.30pm on a weekday, you may think the area was purpose-built for commuters, but once the last few stragglers have headed home, Canada Water’s vibrant community of young professionals and families bring it to life once more.
Disappearing docks
Canada Water’s ornamental canal is within easy reach of flats for sale in SE16
Following years of development by the London Docklands Development Corporation during the 1980s, the capital’s neglected docks were partly infilled to create a lake, wildlife reserve and ornamental canal bordered by high-rise office developments and fashionable, warehouse- style homes.
The arrival of the Jubilee Line in 1999 provided quick connections to Westminster and the West End. In 2010 an overground service was added, making it possible to travel to Shoreditch and the City within ten minutes. Since 2010 further developments have included the building of a spectacular library and culture space plus a new civic plaza, Deal Porter Square.
An evolving Masterplan
Canada Water has come a long way since the 1980s and it continues to evolve. Taking inspiration from the existing character of the area, the Canada Water Masterplan promises to transform Surrey Quays Shopping Centre, Surrey Quays Leisure Park and SE16 Printworks into a new town centre, bringing thousands of jobs and new homes as well as making provision for affordable housing.
