12 Hour Music Marathon in Millbank
This Saturday St. John’s Smith Square are hosting a 12-hour Music Marathon after the huge success of the inaugural event last year. From 10am right through to 10pm there will be a continuous music from a huge variety of musicians taking part including various pianists, violinests, guitarists and singers. This free event means people are able to attend throughout the day when they can. There will also be a series of talks throughout the day from the Director, Richard Heason about the history and architecture of St John’s Smith Square. Only a short walk from our Westminster office. No Place Like Home Exhibition in Southwark
London-based photographer Jonathan Donovan presents his exciting new piece of work called No Place Like Home at Platform in Southwark. This is exhibition comprises of a series of photographic portraits accompanied by audio stories of real Londoners in their homes, from subways to mansions. It explores the different ways in which Londoners make their homes and it reveals and celebrates the diversity of Londoners’ living situations. It took Donovan 18 months to collect all of these photographs and audios from over 100 participants and several community organizations. Opening on Saturday, this exhibition is well worth a visit to get a real sense of how Londoners live.
Open House London in Kennington
Open House London is a city-wide celebration of the buildings, places and neighbourhoods where we live, work and play. For this weekend only, hundreds of great buildings of all types and periods will be opening their doors to everyone, completely for free. As part of the world’s largest architecture festival, this will give people access to more than 800 buildings, walks, talks and tours allowing a quarter of a million people to discover what amazing architecture London has to offer. The City & Guilds of London Art School on Kennington Park Road will be taking part allowing to attend tours of the MA Fine Art Show on Saturday and Sunday. This is a non for-profit, higher eduation institution that has been open since 1879, training artists, carvers and conservators on Cleaver Square. Bearpit Karaoke in Vauxhall
In the world famous Mauerpark in Berlin, Germany, there is a weekly fixture that is massively popular with locals and visitors: Joe Hatchiban’s Bearpit Karaoke. Joe has been helping people unleash their inner performer all over Berlin since 2009 and now with the help of Vauxhall One and Lambeth Council, it is coming to Vauxhall Pleasure Gardens. Directly behind the Royal Vauxhall Tavern, crowds with gather around to watch random strangers singing karaoke in the park encouraging the crowd to take turns. What is now a landmark on Berlin city’s cultural scene, promises to be a good laugh this weekend, so head over to belt out some of your favourite tunes on Thursday, Friday & Saturday.
Bermondsey Street Festival in London Bridge
The Bermondsey Street Festival takes place once again this weekend! Coined the village fete in the middle of the city, this is a community festival run entirey by volunteers for the community. People can enjoy a wide variety of experiences that truly reflect the area including food, design and the famous Dog Show. Join Daniel Cobb at 82-84 Bermondsey Street to have a go designing your own t-shirt with the kids, taking silly photos with our Magic Mirror photo booth and the chance to enter our competition. Sign of The Times Exhibition in London Bridge
Open until the 17th September, Sign Of The Times is a solo exhibition by Tommy Gurr taking place at The Underdog Gallery in London Bridge. Tommy Gurr is a visual artists originally from Kent who has combined his love of art with his love of travelling which hs taken him across the globe from Africa to Australia. You can find his art in Camden and as far east as Cambodia where he has been an artist in residence for the last two years. He will be showcasing his complete collection of contemporary and vintage road signs that have been enhanced by satirical and politically charged stencil illustrations. Each sign is then turned into a standalone statement piece of urban street art.
