This weekend is your last chance to see the 'Fashion on the Ration: 1940s Street Style' at the Imperial War Museum. This stunning exhibition explores the impact of wartime austerity on the way people dressed. Rationing affected every aspect of life, and clothing was one of the areas where the make do and mend attitude really flourished. The results were a move towards a much more casual style of dressing than before, using ingenious renovation and recycling techniques! Through the accessories, photographs, films, artworks, clothing and interviews of that time, this exhibition allows you to gain insight into the lives of men and women during wartime Britain. It also showed off some of the marketing ingenuity of the wartime retailers with items such as gas-mask handbags and luminous blackout buttons.
