Great Big Summer Weekend on South Bank
What better way to spend your August Bank Holiday than with four days of music, performance and dance that make up the Southbank Centre’s Great Big Summer Weekend which is a free event for all ages. Start if off by dancing to DJ Biznizz and DJ Kofi-M on Friday evening. Satruday is about the carnival with the kids’ parade in the day and party in the evening, while on Sunday, Sistem Europe youth orchestra will take over with performances and workshops. Pericles on South Bank
Playwright Chris Bush’s interpretation of the Shakespearean play Pericles comes to the Olivier Theatre this weekend. Together with Public Acts a new initiative that brings together theatre and the community, this production marks a two-year partnership building in-depth relationships with eight organisations who deliver visionary work in their communites, togtehr with Queen’s Theatre Hornchurch. A huge company of all ages from across London join together with professional artists to breathe new life into this classic tale. When a reckless act threatens Prince Pericles safety, he must flee his home and take to sea. Driven from shore to shore, only when reaching the ends of the earth may he finally understand what it means to come home.
Flower Fairies – Botanical Magic in Lambeth
Since they first made an appearance creeping out from behind leaves and flowers in 1918 for the Elves and Fairies postcards, Cicely Mary Barker’s Flower Fairies™ have been enchanting and delighting children and adults alike. A selection of these charming characters will be on display at the Garden Museum in an exhibition which celebrates the centenary of the earliest publication of Barker’s first fairy illustrations. Visitors will be able to see original illustrations for morethan 40 of her Flower Fairies designs as well as previously unseen sketchbooks and drawings together with her research materials. Children visiting the exhibition will have the opportunity to dress up as some of their favourite fairies from Barker’s Illustrations and send pictures to family and friends. The Star Seekers on Southbank
An interactive family show comes to the National Theatre where you take the steering wheel to shape the story whilst the actors improvise the rest. The Star Seekers Alph, Betty and Gammo need your help to save their space station, collect all the orbs and delve into the great unanswered question of the universe: what do astronauts really have for tea? Disover strange worlds, decide the noises of the aliens and even fire asteroids through space. What better way to spend an afternoon with the kids by firing up their imaginations. You can also visit the NT space station one hour before the performance to take part in free family acitivies or book into the family workshop to take your space adventure out of this world!
The Wonderful Wizard of Oz in London Bridge
As part of Summer By The City’s free outdoor theatre season, London Bridge City will be putting on performances of The Wizard Of Oz for the whole family to enjoy. Dorothy has been swept by a tornado far from her Kansas home to the magical land of Oz. Only a mighty Wizard knows how she can return home but, in exchange for the secret, he demands that she destroy the Wicked Witch of The West. Aided by her dog Toto and her new friends, the team must find the brains, the heart and the courage to defeat the evil magician. Bring It On in Southwark
Whether you were once a big fan of the original cheesy teen film or have never heard of it, this bitingly relevant musical written musical written by the Tony Award winner Jeff Whitty and with music by Tony Award winnier composer Lin-Manuel Miranda of Hamilton takes audiences on a high-flying journey that is filled with the complexities of friendship, jealousy, betrayal and forgiveness. Bring It On The Musical is a youth production with an incredibly talented cast and is present by arrangement with Music Theatre International (Europe). Head to Southwark Playhouse this weekend for a truly entertaining and funny show.
