What’s On This Weekend: Feast of St. George, The London Marathon & Picasso 1932
The London Marathon
The Virgin Money London Marathon arrives once again on Sunday, with more than 40,000 people take part. Going along to be a spectator on the day will prove to be a fun and free day out for the whole family, especially if you know someone running for personal achievement or supporting a charity. In 2017, the Marathon raised a record-breaking £61.5 million for charity and since 1981 has raised more than £891 million. With the race stretching over 26.2 miles of London, there will be plenty of spots for you to spectate from including Westminster. The Feast of St. George in Trafalgar Square
This year marks the centenary of the women’s right to vote, which will be combined with this year’s official Mayor of London’s St George’s Day celebrations in Trafalgar Square on Saturday. 100 years since the suffragettes proved victorious, a Victorian music hall show will play tribute to the popular female artists from London’s past as part of the patriotic celebrations this weekend. The square will be decorated in red and white and there will be traditional English food stalls, live music from a 25-piece brass band, old fashioned rides, children’s art workshops as well as a theatre company and a friendly dragon at the centre of all the action.
Street Orchestra’s Big Busk in Lambeth
This Sunday between 4 and 5 pm the Migration Museum will be playing host to the Street Orchestra’s Big Busk. Street Orchestra London and members of London’s diverse busking community will jam together at The Migration Museum At The Workshop to break boundaries and forge new musical friendships. Admission if free, so head down on the day for a unique opportunity to hear London’s buskers accompanied by a live 40-piece orchestra. Street Orchestra London bring orchestral music to everyone, captivating every possible audience regardless of whether they are in an asylum seeker’s centre, a hospice, prison, or between the trees at Regent’s Park. La Escuela in Vauxhall
This Friday, Gasworks in Vauxhall will be presenting La Escuela, a film by Seth Pimlott which has been developed in collaboration with organisations from the Latin American community of South London. This film looks into the transmission of cultural identity between generations whilst celebrating the ability to imagine oneself in the future and reconciling the loss bound up in such a leap. Gasworks have set up the Gasworks Participation Artist in Residence programme which supports London-based artists to develop a piece of work in collaboration with local community groups. Head along at 6.30pm for the launch event and screening of the film which will incorporate complex musical and aesthetic heritage to tell the story of a Colombian women arriving in the UK as a teenager.
St. George’s Day Celebrations in Borough
If the celebrations in Trafalgar square on Saturday aren’t enough for you, Borough Market will also be celebrating St. George’s Day on Sunday with a family-friendly day filled with lots of delicious food, music, storytelling and theatre. Celebrating the influce Saint George has had around the world, you will be able to see him in his carnations. The Turkish-born Roman soldier is patron saint not only of countries ranging from England and Lithuania to Ethiopia and Catalonia but of butchers, shepherds and farmers too! There will be a performance of George and the Dragon, folk dancing including lots of children’s games from the interactive Discovery Barn. This will be a great day out to discover the multicultural side to St. George’s Day. Picasso 1932 – Love, Frame, Tragedy Exhibition, Bankside
The Tate Modern are hosting their first ever solo Pablo Picasso exhibition this summer season, bringing you face-to-face with more than 100 paintings, sculptures and drawings as well as family photographs and rare glimpses into his personal life. Three of his incredible artworks featuring his lover Marie-Thérèse Walter are being shown for the first time since they were created over a period of five days in March 1932. This year is considered an intensely creative period in the life of the 20th Century’s most influential artist. Myths around Picasso’s life story will be revealed and stripped away to reveal the man behind the famous figure and you will be able to see him as you’ve never seen him before.
