I AM BEAR: Workshop with Sav Akyuz at Somerset House
Brought to life by the amazing illustrator Sav Akyüz, I Am Bear is a charming children’s book written by Ben Bailey-Brown who is the comedian also known as Doc Brown. This book is famous for its melodies and sing-a-long hip-hop approach adding fun to children’s reading. At this special workshop taking place at Somerset House, kids will be able to sing along to the I Am Bear song, learn how to draw Bear by Sav himself and also learn interesting facts about bears from all over the world. Only a short journey along the Thames is our Westminster office. Memory Maps: Architecture Walking Tour in Kennington
As part of the London Festival of Architecture project, Memory Maps SE11 by studio ëpp have used old interviews with residents of Kennington and Vauxhall to create walking routes around the local area. With the creative director, Stephanie Odu, as a guide, you will be taking a closer look at the architectural history of various different locations. This is a great way to learn more about the area you live in, whether you’ve been there a long time or simply just moved into the area. The route will start at The Old Court House/Jamyang Buddhist Centre on Renfrew Road. Dirty Dancing Film Screening in Kennington Park
If you’re feeling nostalgic this weekend and loved the original Dirty Dancing movie, then head to Kennington Park this Saturday evening for a fun out door screening of the film hosted by Pop Up Screens. They will be providing some really delicious food as well as a fully-stocked bar, all you need to bring is yourself, something comfy to sit on and something to keep yourself warm in case the weather changes. This is great way to have a relaxing Saturday evening but that also allows you to get out of the house and get some fresh air.
Sea Cadets’ National Band Competition at Tower Bridge
Coming to Tower Bridge this Saturday is the Sea Cadets’ National Band Competition which will see young people from across the UK showing off their impressive musical skills. This special event is free to the public and is only held every two years so is not to be missed. There will be solo buglers and drummers as well as marching bands and they expect to draw in a crowd of 25,000 people to watch. There will be solo performances in the morning and bands will march around the moat of Tower Bridge in the afternoon. This is also a great day out for the family with fun activities for children. Millinery Techniques Festival Headband Workshop in Bermondsey
Have you ever admired those beautiful hats worn at weddings and events such as Ascot and wondered how they’re made? The Fashion and Textile Museum in Bermondsey are hosting a Millinery Techniques introductory workshop where you can have a go at making your own festival headband. They will take you through the inspiring process of where the festival headband came from and show you various designs before teaching you how to make your own headband. You will learn how to incorporate ribbons, buttons, beads, how to make a flower and how to finish it with trimmings. This is the perfect activity for the budding milliner, or for someone who is looking for something extra special to take to that end of summer music festival!
The Africa Centre Summer Festival in Southwark
This Saturday, the Africa Centre is hosting their Summer Festival which takes place all along Great Suffolk Street. This free event will be a full day of performances from bands, groups and singers across three stages. There will also be artistic displays from various artists, tasty and delicious food from across the continent as well as lots of stalls to buy clothing, jewellery and arts and crafts. There will also be plenty of activities to entertain the kids such as face painting, head wrapping, mosaics, African screen printing and jewellery making. This will be a fun day out for the whole family.
